People who have children in this decade may have heard of “it is important to win at the starting line.” More than 30 years ago, I graduated from a prestigious girls' college in Hong Kong. At that time I was surrounded by a bunch of wealthy classmates who were picked up by expensive cars and had private tutors at home. This may not be something surprising nowadays, but more than thirty years ago not every family could afford a lifestyle like this. Winning at the starting line literally means being born rich and having the resources to excel at a young age. Sometimes it may be nice to see that we are better than the others, but life is not just a competition but a long process composed of different experiences. There are wins and losses every single minute. Must we focus on all of them? As I get older, I realise that winning sometimes is not as important as joy; joy sometimes is not as important as health; and health in turn, not as important as indulging in a big meal to give vent to our pressure.
Even if we could go back to the beginning of life, even if we could be reborn, I would not however, choose to win at the starting line. Maybe like Luna in the painting where she shares generously the glamour with the blossoming flower, where she does not need to compare viciously with anyone or anything around her, life would have been much better.
