Story behind
Teaching in Spain to my surprise, allows me to understand my own culture and my mother tongue better. I remember one day I had to explain the meaning of “要” to some foreign students. “要” means “NEED”, but sometimes it also means “WANT/ DESIRE”. In this era of overabundance of information and materials, just a click on the phone and what you ordered will be at your door the next morning. Many times we cannot tell whether our buying is due to our NEED or WANT. After having children, I realise that this topic has become even more significant. “Do you really need this toy? Or do you just want to own it?”
A friend once shared with me a more specific explanation. She said, “If there is a big hole, NEED will fill it up, but WANT will only make the hole bigger and bigger.
The cat in the painting “要” fish, lots and lots of fish. But how would he feel when everything he “要” comes true?
