Story behind
I have been living in Spain for a long time. If I don’t pay attention to articles and news from my hometown Hong Kong, instantly I become out of touch with the Chinese society. Every now and then some new vocabulary comes up and confuses me. Fortunately, I have my close friend Mimi, to update me everything. For instance, the saying "to lie flat 躺平" that appeared many times in the last few years. "To lie flat 躺平", according to Wikipedia, is an Internet terminology that has become popular in The People´s Republic of China in 2021. It refers to the emergence of young people who, instead of following social expectations and persisting in struggling, choose to "lie flat躺平", to have a passive attitude of living without much desires. In practical sense, they do not buy houses, get married nor have children; they spend very little, and they do not participate in any current affairs. I am not against the way these young people respond to the present society, but one needs to realise that self-preservation and avoiding pain (if you consider all the above practical examples are the sources of pain) are not the only human instincts we have. As a human being we also have the urge to activity (sex, travel, play, change), to connect (socialise, share), to search for meaning (knowledge, religions) and to create (art and expressions of all kinds). In other words, we have the need to grow horizontally and vertically, and “lying flat” cannot be a permanent state. If one wants to avoid going downhill in life, I believe one must go upward to compete with oneself and to fight against the external forces. The journey may not be easy, but I have faith that one will see the sunrise.
